TRIBUTE TO DUSTIN HOFFMAN

How do you fit the description of a career like Dustin Hoffman’s into a paragraph? A true Hollywood icon, in his four-and-a-half decades onscreen Hoffman has won two Oscars and created countless indelible characters, from Midnight Cowboy’s crippled street hustler “Ratso” Rizzo to Tootsie’s cross-dressing feminist soap star. Without Hoffman’s inimitable delivery, seemingly throwaway lines like “I’m walkin’ here!” and “I’m an excellent driver” would have never made it into the cultural lexicon. He even helped define the doubt and disillusionment of an entire generation in All the President’s Men and The Graduate, for which director Mike Nichols awarded him the role of Benjamin Braddock over Robert Redford because he projected an “underdog” quality. It’s precisely this everyman relatability that has endeared Hoffman to audiences for so long. Now, the great actor has channeled his formidable experience and talent into his directorial debut, the charming comedy-drama Quartet. As Hoffman kicks off a new phase of his ever-evolving career, now is the perfect time to give this film legend the tribute he so richly deserves.

Join us for a Tribute Program honoring the career of Dustin Hoffman, including a Variety Masterclass Discussion between Dustin Hoffman and Variety Executive Editor Steven Gaydos, and a film screening and career clips overview.

Dustin Hoffman will be presented with the MVFF AWARD, designed by celebrated artist Alice Corning.

After the program, the evening continues with dinner to benefit MVFF at Frantoio Ristorante and Olive Oil Co., one of Marin County's premiere dining destinations.

TRIBUTE TO MIRA NAIR

With Salaam Bombay!, her startlingly poignant 1988 feature debut, Mira Nair immediately announced herself as a world-class filmmaker whose deeply humanistic vision of life and cinema would give rise to some of the most emotionally gripping and visually inventive films of the past two decades. From the colorful culture-clashing of Mississippi Masala and the sensual delights of Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love to the voluptuous Victorian critique of Vanity Fair and the globe-hopping adventures of Amelia, Nair has ranged among disparate epochs, stories and characters with remarkable aplomb, and always with palpable empathy for the dispossessed. Perhaps most celebrated for 2001’s brilliantly conceived, multiple award–winning Monsoon Wedding, for which she returned to her native India, Nair once again works on a large canvas with this year’s The Reluctant Fundamentalist, in which a young Pakistani chases success on Wall Street while feeling the pull of his homeland. Despite her new film’s title, Nair herself has never been reluctant to delve into tricky terrain, much to the benefit of appreciative audiences worldwide.  --Steven Jenkins
