THE TRUTH (LA VÉRETÉ)

US PREMIERE

Master auteur Hirokazu Kore-eda, Palme d’Or winner for Shoplifters (MVFF 2018), directs his first film outside his native Japan, venturing to Paris for a contemplative family drama starring two of Gallic cinema’s biggest stars, Catherine Deneuve and Juliette Binoche. As glamorous movie star Fabienne Dangeville (Deneuve) readies her latest film, a science-fiction drama about a mother who never ages seen through the lifecycle of her daughter and prepares to publish a highly fabricated memoir, her estranged daughter Lumir (a splendid Binoche) arrives with her struggling actor husband (Ethan Hawke) and child for a visit. Fabienne’s projects act as a catalyst, forcing the women to face long- buried, painful truths, a confrontation that will either bring them closer or rupture their relationship completely. With keen knowledge of French cinema and literature, Kore-eda astutely lends the observant, tender eye his audiences have come to cherish to a Francophile’s dream project, the opener of this year’s Venice Film Festival. In French and English with English subtitles US PREMIERE. France/Japan 2019, 106 min Director Hirokazu Kore-eda
