Implicit in recent calls for more women in positions of power in the film industry is a wish to see more women’s values, concerns and worldview represented on screen. But female directors and producers are still dependent on writers for gender-balanced screenplays. While the Bechdel Test’s calculation of on-screen gender representation (Does the story have two or more women in it? Do they talk to each other? About something other than a man?) demonstrates a stark reality, what makes a “woman’s story” is more nuanced. This master class is an opportunity for writers of professional-level work to engage in a collective exploration of the woman’s story and what forms it can take, while cultivating both human authenticity and creative excellence. Open to all genders.
